Thirty-sixth Entry [Video]

[Someone's been avoiding everyone the mansion in a fit of awkward and angst since the mirrors showed up!]

[There's really just too much for Poland to deal with right now. His friend-breakup with Elaine, his encounter with Mirror Lithuania, the knowledge that Mirror Poland was free to scare Aang and hurt Nai and maybe do bad things to his other friends... He's curled up underneath his cloak in a corner of the overgrown garden at the edge of the forest, where he's been hiding out today.]

[The knowledge that his memories were able to disrupt the Mansion itself helps him, gives him hope, makes him feel more powerful. But...]

...I like, can't believe I forgot about them. I just... forgot. My own people... A nation totally shouldn't...

Gawd, this is lame.

Um. Is everyone like, okay and stuff? Apparently my mirror was a mega-bitch to some of you, so like. Uh. Yeah. Everybody cool?

[Crossing his legs, he nods.] Mmhmm!

I like, think my mirror might have done something to really hurt one of my friends. He totally won't tell me what, but... I don't know. And he made a bunch of my other friends think I didn't want to hang out with them anymore...

And there's this other friend, right? She's been really nice to me and helped me with a lot of stuff, but her mirror showed up, and... it like, turns out she's into some really bad stuff and I don't think we can hang out anymore, and I trusted her, you know? I... I like, really trusted her, and it hurts that she was lying to me all this time.

So I can't be her friend anymore, and like, half the other people I know are freaked about my mirror, and I'd talk to America or someone about it except he went home so I can't, and I'd talk to Liet except I'm still all freaked about his mirror trying to mess with me and we haven't talked since the beginning of last week, and I'm not sure whether it's okay for us to be together anymore 'cause it turns out Elaine wasn't really the best person to ask after all, and I spent all last week not remembering my own people, and I just... have way too much shit going on, you know? I like, kind of wish the last two weeks would just go away.

[Well that sure was a lot of information all at once. Aang stares for a moment and then smiles.]

It's okay, it's okay! We'll sort this out.

What's wrong with your friend? What did she lie about?

You know, like, Satan! Beelzebub? The Adversary? The Prince of Darkness? Like, the enemy of all creation?

That's like, so weird.

Okay, pretty much, the deal is that God created, you know, everything. And Satan used to be one of his angels, but he like, got hungry for power and fell from Heaven and became God's enemy. He tempts people to draw them away from God's love, so they won't accept God's forgiveness and have to be his subjects in Hell.

So, you know. Kinda not the best guy ever?

... [He doesn't really understand it, not entirely, but he guesses this is really bad.]

Oh, okay. So he's kind of your enemy, huh? And your friend is his friend?

He's the enemy of like, everything good. He like, literally exists to corrupt creation and draw humans into sin and torment. So... yeah, I'd totally say so.

I like, thought her mirror might have been making it up to make me not want to hang out with her, but I totally asked her about it, and... she like, said she wouldn't lie to me about it anymore.

Oh.... [Aang looks down, frowning.] ...But she told you the truth, right? Did she tell it like she didn't care what you thought, or that she was genuinely sad?

I... I like, totally don't care if she felt sad about it or not! Like, what should it matter to me?

[Except it totally does, and he's just being defensive.]

Well, if she was sad about it, it means you're still important to her and she really does feel bad for leading you on like that. [His tone is calm and even. He's the Avatar, after all; peace is his thing.] She might not be able to change the past, but it sounds like she wants to change the future, and she wants you there with her. [Folding his hands, he sets them on his lap, nodding slightly.] Maybe she thought she was close enough to you to come straight like that.

[Poland frowns, clearly upset. He isn't very used to having friends or trusting people, and being lied to by someone he opened up to... he's really upset about it.]

If I was important to her, she like, would have had more to say about it than "I'm sorry, but there's not much else I can do!" She like, wouldn't have kept lying to me again and again!

[A nation shouldn't show fear or hurt, not when he can help it. It makes other nations see you as vulnerable, and that means your people getting taken advantage of... So he ends up trying to show how hurt he is through anger instead.]

[His face falls.] ..Is that what she said?

[Looking away, he frowns.] ...One of my greatest friends spent most of his life trying to find and capture me. He burned down villages and attacked innocent just trying to get me. He wasn't doing it for the right reasons, and he wasn't doing it in the right way. He hurt a lot of people. [Aang looks back at Poland.] But, when it really came down to it, he saved me. He found what he believed in and he stood up for me. He's saved my life. He taught me Firebending. He helped me save the world.

...I know it's hard to accept the things she's done, but maybe if you try and talk to her, you can work it out. She wouldn't have told you knowing how you feel unless she really cared about you.

There's like, nothing left for us to talk about, if she's so sure that's the side she wants to be on.

Maybe it's not. I was so sure Zuko would never stop fighting for me, but when I gave him a chance he came through. Maybe you just need to talk through it. Maybe she's asking you for help. [A soft smile.] This sort of stuff is never easy, but if you want to keep her as a friend, you have to be able to try and work through it together. It's easier to say you hate someone because of what they've done, but it's more fulfilling to try and make peace instead.

[action!] Hee. I'm thoroughly chaotic good at heart, so really, the MS is more of a stretch for me.

[He puts his hands up.] Oh, no no, that's not what I mean. I'm just trying to say that it's going to be easier to say you can't be her friend, but if you work through the hurt together, it's ultimately better.

Except for the part where she's still totally chill with the greatest force of evil in the universe. Like, how am I supposed to just look past that?

If she means enough to you, it shouldn't be too hard. You don't have to understand or even accept it, but you can still care for her.
